Chapter 5
As they pulled up in front of a small, pale green house, Spencer pulled to the curb, lowered her window, and directed Adam, " I'll pull in the driveway and then you can park behind me, ok?"
Methos, the oldest living Immortal, known to Spencer as Adam Pierson, nodded his agreement.
As they both exited their cars, Adam asked," Don't you lock your car?"
"Why bother?" Spencer asked in return,"I don't keep anything in the car I can't afford to have stolen, and if I lock the door, a determined thief would just break a window or cut through my top. Saves money not to lock it."
"Sound reasoning," Adam agreed. He put his hand in the small of her back and they climbed the porch steps. Spencer stopped to check the mail box, then handed the keys to Adam, indicating the door key and sorted thru the mail while he unlocked the door.
"You can put your coat here," she indicated a tall ornately carved hall tree with a beveled mirror next to the door. " Make yourself comfortable and I'll get a couple of Hornsby's" She entered the living room turning on a lamp that provided soft illumination for the room.
Adam settled himself in the middle of the couch and called out to Spencer, who had gone into the kitchen," Nice arrangement."
"What?" She called back, "I couldn't hear you with my head in the fridge." she explained as she returned carrying two draft ciders and her cigarettes and lighter. She sat next to Adam on the couch, close, but not touching. Kicking off her shoes she tucked one leg under her, sighing in comfort after a long draught on the bottle of Hornsby's Dark draft cider.
"You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can't take Texas out of the girl. As much as I love buying shoes, I hate wearing them all day long,"she confessed.
"I feel the same way about jackets. Do you mind?" he asked, partly shrugging out of his.
"Please do. Here let me help you," she set her drink on the coffee table and reached to assist Adam out of his jacket, stroking his arm as she did so. "You have nice deltoids,"she observed, "Must be the fencing and martial arts."
"Thank you," he tipped his bottle in a toast-gesture. "How did you discover George Hornsby and his delightful brew?"
Laughing at his question, she explained," I had some friends back home who were 'Rennies'. They introduced me to George's brew, and I've been hooked ever since. It's what I drink most of the time. Unless I'm really homesick. My Daddy drank Shiner Boch, so I drink Shiner when I'm homesick or really get to missing him and Mama," she shared, her eyes lightly misted.
Turning his body so that he was facing her, Adam put his arm along the back of the couch and rested his hand lightly on her shoulder. "Do you get to see them very often?" he asked softly.
A single tear escaped from her lowered lids and slid down her right cheek. As Adam reached out and and gently caught the salty drop, she brushed her face against his hand, much like a cat, asking to be petted.
"They died, the summer after I graduated from North Texas. A drunk driver crossed the median and hit them head on at 75 mph." She shook herself as if trying to shake off the gloomy feelings,"after all this time, you'd think it wouldn't bother me this much." She seemed to be chiding herself.
"No," Adam disagreed. "I still have moments of missing lost loved ones, immensely, even though it's been a very long time since some of them left me. I think it's a measure of how much we loved them and how much they loved us. It's really rather comforting if you think of it that way," he proposed, with a degree of authority.
"I suppose you're right. That is a good way to see it." Spencer began to smile again. "And you, do you get to see your family much?"
"I'm in a position to give good advice, Spencer. I'm an orphan, too. I feel rather silly using that term, as old as I am. My parents died a long time ago. A flu-like disease swept through their town and they died within hours of each other. I was there with them, at least I got to say good-bye at the end." It was now Adam's turn to shake himself. "How about brothers and sisters?"
"I struck out there, too. I was an only child. An adopted only child of two adopted only children. I didn't even get cousins," she answered. Then noticing the grin on his face, she gave him a quizical look.
"Ditto. We seem to have a lot in common. I also an only, adopted child...." and they finished in unison, "of two adopted only children."
They laughed and clinked bottles together. Adam toasted," To only children."
"L'Chaim" Spencer countered, draining her bottle."Want another?"
"Let me. I have a good sense of direction. I think I can find the kitchen and make my way back here," he proposed.
"Go for it, Big Guy!" Spencer waved toward the kitchen. While he was gone, she began to rub her foot, drawing it up in her lap and letting her skirt fall back so it pooled around her legs about mid -thigh.
Returning with two more bottles of cider, Adam paused, taking in the site of Spencer, more of her legs exposed than he had hoped to see this evening, rubbing one of her obviously tired feet. "Here you go,"he said handing her one of the bottles. " Let me light your cigarette, you lean back, put your feet in my lap, and let the good Doctor Pierson see if he can't make those feet feel better," he offered.
"Doctor?.... oh, that's right, you do have a PhD, don't you?" Spencer asked and answered her own question. "Well, since you insist...., first let me do one thing, turn your head," She told Adam. With his head turned, she quickly peeled off her tights and threw them in the corner, then she sat back down, took the cigarette he offered, let him light it for her, swung her legs up and put her feet in his lap as she leaned back against the arm of the couch.
